Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their progress".
The prominent academic, who once presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released messages demonstrated that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it respected Summers' determination to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This development comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its records on the case.
The bill will afterward proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has said he expects to sign the bill, after reversing his position on the subject following objections from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked emails made public by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The communications revealed that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with he often seeking to connect Summers to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the emails were shared with the public, Summers stated he accepted "full responsibility for my poor choice to maintain interacting with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and fix connections with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where the professor was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was no longer associated with the group.
Summers joined the directorate of the AI company, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive the company leader.
