Sheff Wed Confronts Major Issues, Says New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's persistent issues constitute a "significant problem" and the independent regulator is aiming to acquire authority to examine team situations in such situations, the recently named head the official has announced.

Through a comprehensive talk, the chairman, who was recently selected, showed understanding towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporters' associations connected to the Championship side in recent days.

The Championship side have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in this season, with the club delaying salary disbursements on several different times, including in September.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the regulator explained.

"The club represents one of the iconic names for football in England and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will permit us to bring Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs brought to our attention if they need to be investigated and dealt with."

Financial Struggles and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri suggested earlier this year he would be open to selling the club at Hillsborough, but he has failed to complete a sale with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in March and May led to sanctions by the league officials in June, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the next three transfer windows, although the ban was rescinded in late summer.

Authority's Position

The regulator explained: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the supporters of Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has been part of their lives in multiple situations.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that over recent decades have faced collapse, or nearly ceased operations, for reasons that have nothing to do with the fans themselves."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and know what's going on, we will."

But Kogan stressed that forcing owners to sell clubs would be considered the final option and the oversight body would choose to cooperate with proprietors.

"Our least desirable course of action is commence engagement with an specific team, an particular chairman, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the issues that the club's facing and the proprietor's dealing with," the regulator explained.

"However, realistically, when you look back over the history of football, over the past few decades there have been certain proprietors, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their clubs and ultimately decline to assume obligation for the coming years."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to explain the responsibilities of the authority recently and maintained it represented a "progressive gathering" with a "substantial involvement" from the lower divisions to the top flight.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if we get it wrong, if the sport makes errors, the significant advances achieved might evaporate swiftly," Kogan said.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we must maintain momentum.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has been invested for the past two decades, because certainty is lacking it will keep flowing into the sport, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on risk and of course, of the coming seasons."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Elite division representatives objected to the creation of a regulator because of concerns about detrimental effects on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I'm absolutely committed to the success and growth as an financial organization of the top division.

"As someone who appreciates the concern of undermining the division as a high-quality offering of England. But at the same time, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, indeed, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the public appointments commissioner after he acknowledged providing funds to the Labour Party in 2020.

The official provided financial support for government minister the minister's leadership bid, along with that of the government leader.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the select committee approved my appointment," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
