Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it might have appeared vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to fit into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is about using it constructively. Skill counts but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched the national side book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach discuss valuing the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in top form, netting important strikes for his club against their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after showing that he is willing to drop big names.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Jude just has that aggression. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone need to help him and establish a setting which he can use that intensity in matches and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at the team news conference for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, restricting the captain's game as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. He is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing Man City in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in strikes from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he suggested using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to get the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter assisting Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him onside but he will be observing him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
